Towing a Car with a Truck: Rules You Must Know

Seeing a truck towing a car on the road is common, but it’s crucial to strictly adhere to the regulations of the Road Traffic Law to ensure safety. This article provides detailed information about the rules when a truck tows a car in traffic.

Conditions for a Truck Towing a Car:

According to the 2008 Road Traffic Law, a car is only allowed to tow another car or specialized vehicle if the towed vehicle cannot operate on its own and must comply with the following regulations:

  • The towed vehicle must have a driver: A driver must be present in the towed vehicle, and its steering system must still be functional. This ensures the ability to control the direction of the towed vehicle if necessary.
  • Secure and safe connection: The connection between the towing vehicle and the towed vehicle must be secure and safe. If the braking system of the towed vehicle is not working, a rigid tow bar must be used to ensure the towed vehicle does not roll freely.
  • Warning signs: Warning signs as prescribed must be displayed at the front of the towing vehicle and the rear of the towed vehicle. These signs help other vehicles easily recognize that a vehicle is being towed, thereby maintaining a safe distance and preventing accidents.

Prohibited Actions When Towing a Car with a Truck:

The Road Traffic Law also clearly stipulates prohibited actions when towing vehicles:

  • Towing additional vehicles or objects: Trailer trucks and semi-trailer trucks are not allowed to tow additional trailers or other vehicles.
  • Carrying passengers in the towed vehicle: It is strictly forbidden to carry passengers in the vehicle being towed as it is very dangerous.
  • Towing rudimentary vehicles: Cars are not allowed to tow rudimentary vehicles, mopeds, or motorcycles. This can be unsafe for the driver of the rudimentary vehicle and other vehicles.
  • Motorcycles and rudimentary vehicles towing other vehicles: Drivers of two-wheeled motorcycles, three-wheeled motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles, and other rudimentary vehicles are not allowed to use their vehicles to tow or push other vehicles or objects.

Penalties:

Violations of towing regulations are subject to penalties under Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, with fines and revocation of driver’s licenses depending on the severity of the violation. Specifically, drivers of cars towing other vehicles in violation of regulations may be fined from VND 800,000 to VND 1,000,000 and have their driver’s license revoked for 1 to 3 months. Penalties for motorcycles and rudimentary vehicles are lower but still strictly enforced.

Conclusion:

Towing a car with a truck must comply with the provisions of the law to ensure traffic safety. Vehicle operators need to understand the conditions, regulations, and penalties to avoid violations and contribute to building a safe and civilized traffic environment.
