Truck Accident in Ha Giang: Driver’s Body Recovered After Plunge

A truck accident in Ha Giang, involving a vehicle plunging into a ravine, shocked the public in the early days of 2024. After nearly two days of urgent search efforts, authorities recovered the driver’s body, bringing a somber end to the holiday period. This incident serves as another stark reminder of road safety, particularly on hazardous mountain passes in northern Vietnam.

At approximately 10:30 AM on December 30, 2023, a truck with license plate 24C-03xx, driven by Mr. Vang Van T., born in 1993 and residing in Ta Chai, Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province, was traveling on provincial road 177. During transit, while attempting to avoid another vehicle, the truck lost traction and overturned into the Song Chay 6 hydropower reservoir in Ha Giang. The accident occurred on provincial road 177, a route notorious for its dangerous curves and treacherous terrain. The sudden incident caused the truck to quickly sink into the depths of the reservoir, raising concerns about the driver’s fate.

Immediately upon receiving the report, the Fire and Rescue Police Department of Ha Giang province, in coordination with the Xin Man District Police, promptly deployed rescue forces. Search operations were carried out urgently, involving numerous officers and specialized equipment. However, the complex underwater terrain, deep water, and cold weather conditions significantly hampered the search efforts.

After nearly two days of relentless efforts, at around 9:00 AM on January 1, 2024, authorities located the body of driver Vang Van T. and handed him over to his family for funeral arrangements. The driver’s passing is a great loss to his family and loved ones, and also a profound warning about the potential risks of traveling on mountainous roads.

The truck accident in Ha Giang is a wake-up call regarding road safety on mountainous routes. Hilly terrain and dangerous curves always pose a risk of accidents, especially for large vehicles like trucks. To ensure safety, drivers need to enhance their awareness of careful driving, comply with traffic laws, thoroughly inspect their vehicles before departure, and control their speed, especially when traveling on dangerous roads. Authorities also need to strengthen inspection and supervision, upgrade traffic infrastructure, and improve warning signs to minimize the risk of accidents, protecting the lives and property of citizens.
