HCMC Cracks Down: Overloaded Truck Fined Nearly $8K

On the afternoon of January 5th, the Traffic Police Team – Order Police of District 12, Ho Chi Minh City, completed procedures to fine a driver and truck owner for serious traffic violations related to carrying overloaded goods on the road and exceeding the permitted weight. The total fine for this violation amounted to nearly 200 million VND, demonstrating the drastic measures taken by authorities to control vehicle weight, especially for trucks operating in HCMC.

The incident occurred around 12 noon on the same day, when a traffic police patrol team was on duty on TA13 Street, in Thoi An Ward, District 12. Here, authorities detected a truck with HCMC license plates, driven by Mr. D.N.D (from Binh Dinh province), showing signs of violation by entering a road with a weight limit of 10 tons. Traffic police immediately requested the vehicle to stop for inspection.

Upon inspection, traffic police determined that the actual total weight of the truck was 26.1 tons, far exceeding the permitted limit for the route. Driver D.N.D confessed to transporting beer from a company to a container yard located on TA13 Street. This action not only endangers the road infrastructure but also poses a risk of accidents, especially in the context of heavy truck traffic in HCMC.

For the “road overload” violation, driver D.N.D was fined 45 million VND, while the vehicle owner (transport company) faced a heavier fine of 140 million VND. Regarding the “goods overload” violation, the driver was fined an additional 3.9 million VND, and the vehicle owner 10 million VND. In total, the fines for both the driver and owner reached 198.9 million VND. In addition, the driver’s license was revoked for 4 points, and the truck’s operating license was suspended for 2 months. This penalty clearly demonstrates the strictness of the law regarding weight violations, especially in managing truck operations in HCMC.

During the handling of the case, traffic police also discovered many container yards, tractor-trailer parking areas, and scrap yards on TA13 Street, with a total of over 50 vehicles. Notably, when they saw the traffic police working, some other container trucks attempted to enter TA13 Street but quickly turned around, showing the immediate deterrent effect of strictly handling violations.

This incident occurred as Decree 168/2024, replacing Decree 100/2019, officially took effect from January 1st, 2025, with many new regulations and increased penalties for road traffic violations. According to statistics from the HCMC Traffic Police Department, in just the first 2 days of applying the new decree, traffic police handled 3,247 violations. This shows that authorities are strengthening control and strictly handling violations to ensure traffic order and safety in the city, especially for truck operations in HCMC.
