The incident of a pickup truck hitting two police officers in Thanh Hoa is causing a stir in public opinion. The driver disobeyed orders, drove away, and caused a series of serious collisions.
On the morning of November 13, Vu Huy Hoang (the driver of the red pickup truck) was driving on Le Loi Avenue, heading from the city center to the BigC roundabout. In Dong Huong Ward, the traffic police team detected signs of violation and signaled the vehicle to stop for inspection.
However, Hoang did not comply, reversing the car on a one-way street, trying to escape. The pickup truck hit a motorbike and dragged it for about 30m. After that, Hoang continued to drive away in the direction of Nguyen Tinh Street. Police and people chased after him on motorbikes.
Arriving at the area on the side of the 379 apartment building, the narrow road made it impossible to continue, Hoang repeatedly drove the car forward and backward, trying to escape. Major Do Minh Khoi (officer of the Traffic Police Team – Thanh Hoa City Police) rode a motorbike (borrowed from a resident) to the back of the car, requesting the driver to stop the vehicle. The pickup truck rammed straight into Major Khoi’s motorbike, rolled under the vehicle, and dragged it for dozens of meters. Major Khoi and residents had to jump onto the sidewalk to avoid injury.
The pickup truck hit a total of 9 cars parked on the street and severely damaged two motorbikes in the process of escaping. After escaping Nguyen Tinh Street, Hoang continued to drive at high speed, weaving through many streets. When he arrived at Trinh Kiem Street, Dong Ve Ward, the car drove onto the sidewalk and got stuck. Police rushed to control Hoang.
The total distance Hoang escaped was about 5-6 km. The alcohol concentration measurement results showed that the driver had 0.77 mg/liter of breath.
At the investigating agency, Hoang confessed that he had previously drunk 5-6 bottles of beer with the team, and continued to sing karaoke after the end. On the way back, he met the traffic police and “was too panicked and lost his composure”, causing the incident. On November 15, Hoang was temporarily detained by the Thanh Hoa City Police for investigation into acts of Resisting persons on duty; Destroying or intentionally damaging other people’s property.
