As transportation business needs evolve, many truck owners find that their current truck bed size is no longer suitable for new types of goods. This leads to inconveniences, reduced transportation efficiency, and unnecessary expenses. The optimal solution in this situation is often to renovate or modify the truck bed. This is not only a cost-saving approach but also shortens the time compared to buying a new truck.
However, modifying a truck bed is not as simple as changing the size or exterior design. According to Vietnamese law, specifically Article 5 of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT, the modification of road motor vehicles requires technical design documents. Among these, the technical drawing plays a crucial role.
So why is a truck bed design drawing a mandatory requirement when modifying a truck? Let’s delve into the details.
What is a Truck Drawing and Why is it Necessary for Modification?
A truck drawing, or more precisely, a technical drawing of the truck bed, is a document that details the technical specifications, dimensions, materials, and structure of the truck bed after modification. This is an indispensable part of the design dossier for modified motor vehicles as regulated by the Ministry of Transport.
According to Article 5 of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT, the design dossier for modified motor vehicles includes:
- Technical design explanation of the motor vehicle (original copy) as stipulated in section A of Appendix I issued with this Circular.
- Technical drawing (original copy) as stipulated in section B of Appendix I issued with this Circular.
Thus, when proceeding with truck modification, truck owners need to prepare these two types of documents in full. Among them, the technical drawing of the truck bed is the “guiding star” for the modification process, ensuring that the completed truck bed meets technical safety and environmental standards, while also complying with legal regulations.
Cases Exempt from Preparing a Truck Design Dossier
However, not all truck modification cases require a technical drawing. Article 6 of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT stipulates several cases that are exempt from preparing a modification design dossier, including:
- Driving training and testing vehicles: Installing or removing auxiliary brake pedals mechanically linked to the main brake pedal.
- Dump trucks: Installing or removing dust covers for the truck bed without changing the internal dimensions of the bed.
- Pickup trucks: Installing or removing cargo or luggage compartment covers without changing the overall dimensions of the vehicle.
- Dump trucks and tank trucks imported, manufactured, assembled, or modified before November 1, 2014: Voluntarily reducing the volume of the cargo box or tank to comply with Circular 42/2014/TT-BGTVT.
- Modified motor vehicles with installed LPG fuel supply systems: Removing this system to revert to using the original fuel system.
- Semi-trailers (excluding dump semi-trailers) and container semi-trailers: Modification to change the position of axles, axle groups, and kingpins until December 31, 2015, if the total weight allowed for traffic participation is less than the total weight according to the design.
- Modifications according to standard designs announced by the Vietnam Register.
If your truck modification falls into one of the above cases, you will be exempt from preparing a modification design dossier, meaning you will not need a technical drawing of the truck bed.
Optimizing Truck Drawings for Intended Use
A truck drawing is not only a legal procedure but also an important tool for optimizing the functionality of the truck bed. A detailed and accurate drawing will help:
- Ensure appropriate dimensions and load capacity: The drawing helps accurately determine the size of the truck bed to be modified to carry the correct type of goods, avoiding overloading, exceeding size limits, causing danger, and violating the law.
- Optimize materials and truck bed structure: The drawing clearly shows the type of material and structure of the truck bed, helping to choose the optimal solution in terms of durability, load-bearing capacity, and cost, suitable for the intended use and type of goods transported.
- Ensure aesthetics and brand image: The drawing can include aesthetic design elements, colors, and brand logos, helping the truck bed not only ensure functionality but also contribute to promoting the company’s image.
