A serious traffic accident between a pickup truck and a train in Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai province, resulted in 2 deaths and 3 injuries. The pickup truck driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol.
Authorities are actively investigating the cause of this tragic accident. Initial information suggests the accident was largely the fault of the pickup truck driver for disobeying the “Attention Train” warning sign. The incident also raises questions about the responsibility of local authorities in managing unsafe railway crossings.
Tragic Accident: Severe Consequences
The collision between the pickup truck and the train occurred at approximately 8:40 PM on July 28th at a level crossing between the railway and Pham Van Thuan Street, Bien Hoa City. The pickup truck was thrown by the train into a garbage truck on the side of the road, leading to the deaths of a garbage collector and a boy of about 13 years old. Three other people in the pickup truck sustained serious injuries.
Two seriously injured victims are being treated at Dong Nai General Hospital. Patient N.T.U. suffered multiple injuries to the maxillofacial region and traumatic brain injury. Patient V.V.K. (the pickup truck driver) sustained minor injuries to the face and left shoulder.

Initial Cause: Pickup Truck Driver’s Fault
According to initial investigation results, the main cause of the accident was the pickup truck driver’s failure to comply with the “Attention Train” warning sign. The level crossing guard stated that at the time of the accident, the barrier had been lowered and warning signals were active, but the driver still attempted to cross the tracks.

The Safety Inspection Department III (Vietnam Railway Authority) also suggested that local authorities bear partial responsibility for implementing Prime Minister’s Decision 358 on eliminating unauthorized level crossings in their managed areas.
Test Results: Driver Negative for Alcohol and Drugs
Test results showed that the pickup truck driver, V.V.K., tested negative for alcohol and drugs. This eliminates the possibility of the driver losing control due to substance use. However, the specific reason why the driver ignored the warning signals is still under investigation.
Valuable Lesson on Traffic Safety
This accident once again raises a warning about traffic safety, especially at railway crossings. Strict adherence to traffic laws and compliance with warning signals are crucial to protect lives for oneself and the community. Subjectivity and carelessness of road users can lead to unfortunate consequences.
