2019 witnessed fascinating shifts in the Vietnamese automobile market. The competition in designs, attractive pricing policies, and various macroeconomic factors created a ranking of the top 10 best-selling cars of 2019 with significant changes compared to the previous year.
Toyota Vios continued to assert its leading position, but the strong emergence of the newcomer Mitsubishi Xpander created a new wave. Many familiar names that once dominated the rankings, such as Kia Morning and Mazda CX-5, had to make way for potential new faces like Kia Cerato or Hyundai Accent. Below are the detailed lists of the 10 best-selling cars in the Vietnamese market in 2019:
1. Toyota Vios: 27,180 Units
Toyota Vios – Best-selling car in 2019
Toyota Vios continued to maintain its reign in the Vietnamese automobile market in 2019 with an impressive sales volume of 27,180 units, surpassing the second-place Mitsubishi Xpander by more than 7,000 units. This outstanding sales performance is a testament to Toyota’s continuous efforts to improve the design and equip Vios with amenities. The latest information shows that the Vios 2020 version continues to be supplemented with many useful features, promising to consolidate the leading position of this model in the following year. Toyota Vios is not only a means of transportation but also a symbol of durability and reliability, important factors in the purchasing decisions of many Vietnamese customers.
2. Mitsubishi Xpander: 20,098 Units
Mitsubishi Xpander – Best-selling MPV in 2019
The runner-up in the ranking is Mitsubishi Xpander, a small MPV from Japan. With sales of 20,098 units, Xpander made a spectacular breakthrough, surpassing many formidable competitors to take second place. Just one year after its launch, Xpander continuously set impressive sales milestones, defeating Toyota Innova and dominating the 5+2-seater MPV segment. Customers appreciate the Xpander for its modern, eye-catching exterior design, comfortable interior space, and extremely attractive price. In 2019, the Xpander was supplemented with a Premium version, in addition to the two standard MT and AT versions, with prices ranging from 550 – 620 million VND. The success of the Mitsubishi Xpander shows a change in the car selection trends of Vietnamese consumers, prioritizing versatile cars, youthful designs, and affordable prices.

Compared to 2018, Hyundai Accent recorded a sales growth of more than 7,000 vehicles, opening up a promising future for this B-segment sedan in the race to compete for the throne with Toyota Vios. The 5th generation Hyundai Accent is currently distributed in Vietnam with prices ranging from 426 – 542 million VND. Youthful design, modern equipment, and stable operation have helped Hyundai Accent attract a large number of customers, especially first-time car buyers.

Hyundai i10 – Best-selling A-segment car in 2019
2019 witnessed a decrease in sales of the small A-segment car line, as Hyundai i10 only reached 18,088 units, a decrease of nearly 4000 units compared to 2018. This caused Hyundai i10 to lose the runner-up position and sadly ranked 4th in the ranking. Hyundai i10’s sales decreased partly due to fierce competition from other upgraded A-segment cars, as well as the attractiveness of B-segment cars with competitive prices. In addition, the new Hyundai i10 version does not have many improvements in appearance and accompanying equipment is also a factor that makes the car’s sales not meet expectations. However, Hyundai i10 is still the top choice in the A-segment car segment thanks to its compact size, flexibility, and fuel efficiency.
5. Mazda 3: 13,761 Units
Mazda 3 – Best-selling C-segment car in 2019

Despite encountering some initial technical errors, Honda CR-V quickly overcame them and recorded a shortage of goods and price increases at dealers in early 2019. These are encouraging signs and open up a promising future for this SUV model in the Vietnamese market in 2020. Honda CR-V conquers customers with its sporty design, spacious interior, powerful performance, and advanced safety features.

Ford Ranger is not only a powerful means of transportation but also a symbol of a dynamic and personal lifestyle, favored by many business and individual customers. 8. Toyota Fortuner: 12,667 Units

In addition, in the last quarter of 2019, Toyota continuously launched incentive programs, promotions, and discounts, helping Fortuner’s sales reach 12,667 units, entering the top 10 best-selling cars of 2019 and opening up a promising future in 2020. Toyota Fortuner is still the preferred choice of many Vietnamese families thanks to its spaciousness, durable operation, and reputable Toyota brand.
9. Toyota Innova: 12,164 Units
Toyota Innova – Traditional 7-seater MPV in 2019
The once-dominant 7-seater MPV with sales of 14,581 units in 2018 unexpectedly dropped to 9th place in the ranking with sales in 2019 reaching only 12,164 units. The main reason comes from the rise of new 5+2-seater MPVs such as Mitsubishi Xpander or Suzuki Ertiga, with more youthful and modern designs and competitive prices. These models have attracted more customers than the Innova, which has a slightly bulky design and few upgrades in equipment in recent times. Mitsubishi Xpander is gaining an advantage in all aspects, what will Toyota do to bring Innova back to the leading position? Let’s wait and see in 2020. Despite the decrease in sales, Toyota Innova is still a popular MPV because of its durability, fuel efficiency, and flexible ability to carry people and goods.
