What is a Truck Badge? How Long is it Valid?

A truck badge is a legal certification that must be affixed to the right side of the windshield. It contains information about the transport business, license number, registration number, and expiration date.

The validity period of a truck badge is specified in Article 22 of Decree 10/2020/ND-CP, ranging from 1 to 7 years depending on the remaining lifespan of the vehicle:

  • Vehicles under 5 years old: The badge is valid for 1 year.
  • Vehicles between 5 and 10 years old: The badge is valid for 3 years.
  • Vehicles 10 years and older: The badge is valid for 7 years.

Businesses can request the Department of Transport to issue badges with a specific validity period between 1-7 years as needed.

Which Vehicles are Required to Display a Badge?

According to Decree 10/2020/ND-CP and Circular 12/2020/TT-BGTVT, the following vehicles must display a badge:

  • Trucks engaged in general freight transport: Trucks of 7 tons or more, container trucks, tractor trucks, oversized and overweight vehicles.
  • Trucks engaged in passenger transport: Passenger trucks with 20 seats or more, buses.

Consequences of Not Having or Having an Expired Badge

Decree 86/2014/ND-CP stipulates a fine of VND 3,000,000 – 5,000,000 for individual drivers and revocation of the driver’s license for 1-3 months. Vehicle owners are fined VND 4,000,000 – 6,000,000 (individuals) or VND 8,000,000 – 12,000,000 (organizations) and are required to install a badge.

Expired Badge

Decree 100/2019/ND-CP stipulates a heavier penalty: A fine of VND 5,000,000 – 7,000,000 and revocation of the driver’s license for 1-3 months. Vehicle owners are fined VND 6,000,000 – 8,000,000 (individuals) or VND 12,000,000 – 16,000,000 (organizations).

The penalties for using an expired truck badge are higher than for not having one.

Latest Truck Badge Application Procedures

Eligibility and Documents

Businesses with a Road Transport Business License using automobiles that meet the transport business conditions according to Decree 86/2014/ND-CP. The dossier includes:

  • Application form for badge issuance (according to the form).
  • Copy of the Road Transport Business License.
  • Copy of the vehicle registration certificate.
  • Copy of the certificate of technical safety and environmental protection inspection.

All copies must be accompanied by the originals for comparison.

Process and Fees

Submit the application to the Department of Transport. The Department of Transport receives, processes, and issues the badge within 2 working days if the application is valid. Fees according to Circular 120/2020/TT-BTC:

  • 1-year badge: VND 100,000/vehicle.
  • 3-year badge: VND 200,000/vehicle.
  • 7-year badge: VND 300,000/vehicle.
