Pickup Truck Inspection Period 2024: Latest Regulations and Details

Pickup trucks are becoming increasingly popular in Vietnam, meeting both freight transport and personal/family travel needs. However, one issue that pickup truck owners need to pay special attention to is inspection regulations, especially the pickup truck inspection period. Circular 08/2023/TT-BGTVT has introduced important adjustments to the vehicle inspection cycle, including pickup trucks. So, what is the current regulation for the pickup truck inspection period? This article from Xe Tải Mỹ Đình experts will provide the latest and most detailed information, helping you understand the regulations, comply with them, and use your vehicle effectively.

Pickup Truck Inspection Period According to the Latest Regulations

According to Circular 08/2023/TT-BGTVT amending Circular 16/2021/TT-BGTVT, there have been changes to the vehicle inspection cycle. For pickup trucks, the inspection period is determined based on the vehicle’s manufacturing date. Specifically, Item 4 of Appendix XI issued with Circular 02/2023/TT-BGTVT, as amended by Appendix V of Circular 08/2023/TT-BGTVT, stipulates the following:

For pickup trucks manufactured up to 7 years ago:

  • First cycle: 24 months. This applies to new vehicles or vehicles with the most recent year of manufacture.
  • Regular cycle: 12 months. After the first cycle, the vehicle needs to be inspected regularly once a year.

For pickup trucks manufactured over 7 years ago:

  • Inspection cycle: 6 months. Vehicles that have been in use for more than 7 years need to be inspected more frequently, every 6 months, to ensure technical safety.

Thus, the pickup truck inspection period is clearly distinguished according to the length of use, with the aim of ensuring that the vehicle is always in a technically safe condition when participating in traffic. Understanding the pickup truck inspection period helps vehicle owners proactively arrange time and costs to carry out inspections on time, avoid being fined, and ensure their rights when participating in traffic.

How to Calculate the Manufacturing Date of a Pickup Truck to Determine the Inspection Period

To accurately determine the pickup truck inspection period, understanding how to calculate the vehicle’s manufacturing date is very important. Sub-item e Item 1 of Appendix V of Circular 08/2023/TT-BGTVT clearly stipulates the principle of determining the inspection cycle, including the vehicle’s manufacturing date:

e) The manufacturing date of a motor vehicle used as a basis for issuing an inspection cycle is calculated by year (like the method of calculating the service life of a motor vehicle).

According to this regulation, the vehicle’s manufacturing date is calculated by year, similar to how the vehicle’s service life is calculated. This means that the year of manufacture is determined as the year the vehicle was manufactured, regardless of the specific month or day of manufacture.

Example:

A pickup truck is manufactured in 2023.

  • As of December 31, 2025, the vehicle is calculated to have been manufactured for 2 years (2025 – 2023 = 2 years). Therefore, during this period, the vehicle applies the inspection cycle for vehicles under 7 years.
  • From January 1, 2026, the vehicle is calculated to have been manufactured for over 2 years (2026 – 2023 = 3 years). The vehicle still applies the inspection cycle for vehicles under 7 years until it exceeds 7 years of manufacture.

The above example helps vehicle owners easily determine the manufacturing date of their vehicle and then apply the correct pickup truck inspection period as prescribed. Calculating the correct manufacturing date helps vehicle owners plan appropriate inspections, avoiding unnecessary troubles.

General Principles When Determining the Vehicle Inspection Cycle

In addition to the specific regulations on the pickup truck inspection period, Circular 08/2023/TT-BGTVT also sets out general principles when determining the inspection cycle for all types of motor vehicles, including pickup trucks. These principles are clearly stated in Item 1 of Appendix V:

Principles for determining the inspection cycle of motor vehicles

a) General principles

The first cycle specified in item 2 of this Appendix applies to the following subjects: Motor vehicles that are exempt from initial inspection as mentioned in clause 3 Article 5 of this Circular; unused motor vehicles that must undergo initial inspection (have a manufacturing year up to the year of submitting the application for the first Certificate of Inspection under 03 years (year of manufacture plus 02 years)). The time from the year of manufacture to the year of submitting the application for a certificate of inspection is determined according to the instructions in point e item 1 of this Appendix.

The regular cycle specified in item 2 of this Appendix applies to the following subjects: All types of motor vehicles undergoing initial inspection that are not eligible to be applied according to the first cycle mentioned above; Motor vehicles inspected in subsequent times.

b) A modified motor vehicle is a motor vehicle that has undergone conversion or changes to one of the following systems: steering, brakes (except for the case of installing an additional auxiliary brake pedal).

c) A motor vehicle inspected and issued with a Certificate of Inspection with a term of 15 days is not considered the first cycle.

d) If the subsequent motor vehicle inspection has an inspection period calculated according to a regular cycle that is shorter than the inspection period of the most recent inspection cycle, then the inspection period granted in the subsequent time is equal to the inspection period of the most recent inspection cycle corresponding to the “Vehicle Type” in the Inspection Cycle Table, but calculated from the date of inspection of the most recent inspection cycle.

e) The manufacturing date of a motor vehicle used as a basis for issuing an inspection cycle is calculated by year (like the method of calculating the service life of a motor vehicle).

These principles further clarify how to determine the first cycle, regular cycle, and special cases such as modified vehicles, and re-inspected vehicles. Mastering these principles, combined with specific regulations on the pickup truck inspection period, helps vehicle owners to fully comply with the law and ensure safety for themselves and the community when using the vehicle.
