Truck Registration Deadlines According to Regulations

Truck registration deadlines are regulated by the Ministry of Transport and applied to each type of vehicle, based on the vehicle’s age. Specifically:

  • Trucks under 7 years old: Initial registration after 24 months, subsequent registrations every 12 months.
  • Trucks from 7 years old and older: Registration every 6 months.
  • Trucks over 20 years old: Registration every 3 months.
  • Trailers under 12 years old: Initial registration after 24 months, subsequent registrations every 12 months.
  • Trailers from 12 years old and older: Registration every 6 months.
  • Modified or structurally altered vehicles: Initial registration after 12 months, subsequent registrations every 6 months.
  • Special-purpose vehicles, tractor trucks: Apply the same regulations as trucks of the same age.

Truck Registration Procedure

The truck registration procedure consists of 4 basic steps:

  1. Prepare hồ sơ (documents): ID card/Citizen ID, household registration book of the vehicle owner (copy and photocopy), vehicle registration certificate, civil liability insurance, environmental certificate, VAT invoice, ex-factory paper, inspection certificate (original).
  2. Vehicle inspection: Inspection staff will check the entire vehicle according to technical safety and environmental protection standards. If the vehicle does not meet the requirements, the owner must repair and re-inspect. Truck registration processTruck registration process
  3. Pay fees and receive vehicle: After the vehicle meets the requirements, the owner pays road maintenance fees and receives the vehicle back.
  4. Affix registration stamp: Staff will affix the registration stamp on the front windshield on the passenger side.

Truck Registration Fees 2024

Truck registration fees are regulated according to Circular 55/2022/TT-BTC and depend on the vehicle type and tonnage:

  • Trucks over 20 tons: 570,000 VND.
  • Trucks from 7 to under 20 tons, tractor trucks pulling up to 20 tons: 360,000 VND.
  • Trucks from 2 to under 7 tons: 330,000 VND.
  • Trucks under 2 tons: 290,000 VND.
  • Trailers, semi-trailers: 190,000 VND.

Penalties for Expired Truck Registration

Expired truck registration will be penalized according to Decree 123/2021/ND-CP:

  • Expired for under 1 month: Fines of 3-4 million VND for drivers, revocation of driving license for 1-3 months; fines of 4-6 million VND for individual vehicle owners, 8-12 million VND for organizational vehicle owners.
