Truck Fuel Consumption: From 1 Ton to 15 Ton – Fuel Guide

Fuel costs account for 40-60% of transportation costs and are a major factor determining freight rates. Knowing the fuel consumption rate of trucks helps drivers calculate the amount of fuel needed for a journey, while also assisting transport businesses in determining operating costs.

1. Formula for Calculating Truck Fuel Consumption

The fuel consumption rate of any truck is calculated using the formula: Distance traveled (km) / Fuel used (liters). This formula indicates how many kilometers a truck can travel with 1 liter of gasoline/diesel.

For the same distance, you can easily calculate the fuel consumption of each type of truck, thereby comparing and choosing the most suitable type for your needs.

2. Truck Fuel Consumption by Load Capacity

Applying the above formula to a distance of 100km, the truck fuel consumption rate is estimated as follows:

– 1-ton trucks:

  • Models such as Teraco 100, Dongben 1 ton, Thaco Towner 1 ton: 7-8 liters/100km.
  • Kenbo 1 ton: approximately 10 liters/100km.

– 1.5 – 2 ton trucks:

  • Thaco K200 1.9 ton, Hyundai H150 1.5 ton, Isuzu 1.4 ton: 8-9 liters/100km.

– 2 – 2.5 ton trucks:

  • Iz49 Do Thanh 2.4 ton, Iz65 Do Thanh 2.5 ton, Hyundai N250SL 2.5 ton, Kia K200 1.9 ton, Kia K250 2.5 ton, Isuzu 2.4 ton, Jac 2.4 ton, Hino 1.9 ton: approximately 10 liters/100km.

– 3.5-ton trucks:

  • Hyundai Mighty 75S 3.5 ton, Hyundai Do Thanh Iz65 3.5 ton, Isuzu 3.5 ton, Hino 3.5 ton, Fuso 3.5 ton, Ollin 3.5 ton, Jac 3.5 ton: approximately 11 liters/100km.

– 7 – 8 ton trucks:

  • Hyundai 110S, EX8 8 ton, Mighty 8 ton, Isuzu 8 ton: approximately 12 liters/100km.

– 9 – 10 ton trucks:

  • Daewoo 9 ton, Isuzu 9 ton, Hyundai 9 ton and 10 ton, Hino 9-10 ton: 19-21 liters/100km.

– 15-ton trucks, tractor trucks:

  • Daewoo 3-axle 15 ton, Hyundai 3-axle 15 ton HD240, HD320 4-axle, Hyundai 15-ton dump truck, Daewoo 15-ton dump truck, Daewoo tractor truck, Hyundai HD1000 tractor truck, Daewoo tractor truck: approximately 30 liters/100km.

It should be noted that the fuel consumption rate of two trucks with the same load capacity may differ due to many influencing factors.

3. Factors Affecting Truck Fuel Consumption

Factors affecting fuel consumptionFactors affecting fuel consumption

– Usage conditions: Environmental temperature, terrain (flat roads, winding roads, passes, wet or dry roads), vehicle condition, number of people in the car… all affect the fuel consumption rate. Vehicles carrying heavy loads or with many people will consume more fuel. Vehicles running on highways usually consume less fuel than vehicles running in cities that frequently encounter traffic jams.

– Engine & Brand:

Each car manufacturer uses different engines and manufacturing technologies, leading to differences in fuel consumption rates between vehicles of the same load capacity. For example, a non-turbocharged engine will consume more than a turbocharged engine.

– Driving habits: Habits of hard braking, speeding, or inexperienced driving can increase fuel consumption by 5-30%.

– Fuel quality: Poor quality fuel leads to higher consumption and can even cause vehicle damage if used for a long time.

When buying a used car, you should consult previous users about the actual fuel consumption rate. With new cars, refer to the parameters from the manufacturer and verify them yourself after a period of use.
