Can Tho Bridge Traffic Jam: Accident Analysis & Solutions

On February 1st (the 4th day of the Lunar New Year), around 3 PM, a multi-vehicle collision involving three cars occurred on Can Tho Bridge, heading from Can Tho to Vinh Long. This incident quickly caused severe traffic congestion, affecting thousands of vehicles traveling on this vital route, especially as people returned from the Mekong Delta provinces to the Southeast after the Tet holiday.

According to initial reports, the accident happened when a pickup truck, traveling near the middle of Can Tho Bridge, suddenly rear-ended a 7-seater car in front of it. Immediately after, another 7-seater car from behind further collided with the rear of the pickup truck, creating a chain reaction.

Although the accident did not result in any injuries, all three vehicles sustained damage, with dents and crumples to their front and rear ends. Notably, the accident occurred at a time when traffic volume on Can Tho Bridge was surging due to people returning to work in the southeastern provinces after the Tet holiday. Consequently, the collision quickly plunged traffic in the area into chaos.

Traffic police officers quickly arrived at the scene to direct traffic. However, due to the sheer volume of vehicles, the congestion rapidly spread to the roads leading up to Can Tho Bridge. According to a reporter from the Traffic Newspaper, by 4 PM on the same day, National Highway Nam Song Hau, heading towards the IC3 interchange, was completely blocked on all three lanes, stretching for several kilometers. Even the motorcycle lane was moving very slowly.

Traffic moving from Hung Loi Bridge (National Highway Nam Song Hau) towards the IC3 interchange was inching along bumper-to-bumper. The prolonged congestion left many commuters feeling tired and impatient.

After the collision, the traffic police of Can Tho City urgently removed the three damaged vehicles from the scene. At present, traffic on Can Tho Bridge has returned to normal. However, due to the continued influx of vehicles, National Highway 1, from the Can Tho – Phung Hiep BOT toll station to the area near Can Tho Bridge, is still experiencing lengthy congestion.

Traffic Solutions and Safety on Can Tho Bridge and Roads

The traffic congestion on Can Tho Bridge once again highlights the challenges of infrastructure and traffic participation in Vietnam, especially during holidays when vehicle volume increases dramatically. To minimize congestion and ensure traffic safety, comprehensive and effective solutions are needed:

  1. Upgrade and expand traffic infrastructure: Can Tho Bridge and National Highway 1 are vital routes that need to be upgraded and expanded to meet increasing traffic demands. Building more bypasses and expressways is also an important solution to reduce the load on existing routes.
  2. Strengthen traffic control and routing: Traffic police forces need to be reinforced, especially during holidays, to proactively control and divert traffic, guiding people to move appropriately, avoiding congestion points.
  3. Raise awareness of traffic participation: Promoting and educating traffic laws needs to be stepped up to raise public awareness when participating in traffic. Everyone needs to consciously comply with traffic laws, be considerate, drive safely, not speed or overtake recklessly, and not use alcohol when driving.
  4. Apply information technology to traffic management: Traffic monitoring camera systems and online traffic information systems need to be invested in and developed to provide real-time information about traffic conditions, helping people proactively choose suitable travel routes.

Conclusion

The multi-vehicle collision on Can Tho Bridge on the 4th day of Tet is a wake-up call about the complex and potentially dangerous traffic situation on key routes. Besides upgrading infrastructure, raising awareness of traffic participation and applying technology to traffic management are key solutions to ensure safety and smooth traffic on all roads. Hopefully, with the joint efforts of functional agencies and the people, the traffic situation will be increasingly improved, contributing to the socio-economic development of the country.
