Truck Body Blueprints: Are They Required for Truck Mods?

Do you own a truck and plan to change the size or design of its body to better suit new cargo transportation needs? Modifying a truck body is not just about changing the external design; it also involves legal regulations and ensuring safety on the road. So, how important is a truck body blueprint in this process? This article from the experts at Xe Tải Mỹ Đình will help you understand this issue clearly.

Many truck owners face situations where their current vehicle is no longer suitable for new business cargo due to the body size not meeting transportation requirements, causing inconvenience and additional costs. The optimal solution in this case is to renovate or modify the truck body. This is considered the most cost-effective and time-saving option compared to buying a new truck.

However, truck body modifications cannot be carried out arbitrarily. Vietnamese law, specifically Article 5 of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT, clearly stipulates the design dossier for modified motor vehicles, in which the technical drawing of the truck body is an indispensable component.

Article 5. Design dossier for modified motor vehicles

The design dossier for modified motor vehicles includes:

  1. Technical design explanation of the motor vehicle (original copy) as regulated in section A of Appendix I issued with this Circular;
  2. Technical drawing (original copy) as regulated in section B of Appendix I issued with this Circular.

Thus, to modify a car, vehicle owners need to prepare all necessary documents as prescribed, including:

  • Original copy of the technical design explanation of the car according to section A of Appendix I of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT.
  • Original copy of the technical drawing according to section B of Appendix I of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT.

When is a Truck Body Blueprint Not Necessary?

Although a truck body blueprint is a mandatory requirement in many modification cases, there are still instances where design dossiers are exempted. Article 6 of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT stipulates cases where modified motor vehicles are exempt from preparing a modification design dossier, including:

  • Training and testing vehicles installing or removing auxiliary brake pedals linked to the main brake pedal via a mechanical linkage rod.
  • Installing or removing dust covers for the bodies of dump trucks without changing the internal dimensions of the truck body.
  • Installing or removing covers for cargo or luggage compartments of PICKUP trucks without changing the overall dimensions of the vehicle.
  • Imported, manufactured, assembled, or modified dump trucks and tank trucks before November 1, 2014, voluntarily reducing the volume of cargo bodies or tanks to comply with Circular 42/2014/TT-BGTVT.
  • Removing the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel supply system for engines of vehicles that have been modified to install an LPG fuel supply system to revert to using only the original fuel supply system.
  • Modifying the position of axles, axle assemblies, and kingpins until December 31, 2015, for semi-trailers (except dump semi-trailers) and container semi-trailers with a total permitted mass for traffic participation less than the total mass according to the design.
  • Modifications according to standard designs announced by the Vietnam Register.

If your truck body modification falls into one of the above exemptions, you will not need a technical design drawing of the truck body. However, to be certain, you should carefully consult Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT or contact truck modification specialists for specific advice.

How Important is a Truck Body Blueprint?

A truck body blueprint is not just a legal procedure but also brings many practical benefits:

  • Ensuring legality: With a technical drawing, your modification dossier will be approved by competent authorities, helping your vehicle circulate legally.
  • Ensuring technical safety: The blueprint is designed by specialized engineers, ensuring the modified truck body meets safety standards and does not affect the vehicle’s operability and safety.
  • Optimized design: The blueprint helps realize your truck body modification ideas accurately, optimizing functionality and suitability for the type of cargo transported.
  • Easy construction: A detailed blueprint is the basis for bodywork workshops to perform work accurately, minimizing errors and construction time.
