Truck Body Design Drawings: Key for Vehicle Modification

In the transport business, many truck owners face changing cargo types, making their current truck body size unsuitable. This hinders transportation, reduces economic efficiency, and incurs unnecessary costs. An optimal solution is to modify the truck body, saving time and money compared to buying a new truck. However, modifying a truck body is complex and requires legal compliance, especially regarding technical design drawings. Why are truck body design drawings so important and mandatory for modification?

Why are Truck Body Design Drawings Mandatory?

According to Article 5 of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT on modifying road motor vehicles, a truck body design drawing is mandatory in the vehicle modification design dossier. This isn’t just an administrative procedure but a crucial element ensuring the modification process is standardized, safe, and legal.

Firstly, legal compliance: Requiring truck body design drawings falls within the legal framework, ensuring all vehicle modification activities are controlled and managed by authorities. This prevents unauthorized and unsafe vehicle modifications that could impact traffic safety.

Secondly, ensuring technical safety: The truck body design drawing is a vital technical basis for the construction unit to perform modifications according to approved standards and specifications. The detailed drawing clearly shows the dimensions, materials, and structure of the modified truck body, ensuring stable and safe vehicle operation, preventing danger to people and goods during transportation.

Thirdly, supporting the registration process: After completing the truck body modification, the vehicle owner must go through a registration process to obtain a circulation permit. The modified vehicle registration dossier must include the thẩm định truck body design drawing. This is the basis for the registration agency to assess and inspect the quality and conformity of the modified vehicle with regulations. Without a valid design drawing, the registration process will face difficulties or even be rejected.

Fourthly, clearly showing technical specifications: The truck body design drawing provides complete and detailed important technical specifications of the modified truck body, including:

  • Overall dimensions and internal dimensions: Length, width, and height of the truck body, ensuring compliance with regulations on vehicle size limits.
  • Truck body materials: The type of material (steel, aluminum, composite, etc.) and thickness, ensuring the durability, load-bearing capacity, and lifespan of the truck body.
  • Truck body frame structure: Load-bearing frame design, ensuring the strength and stability of the truck body during operation.
  • Auxiliary details: Location and technical specifications of details such as lifting platforms, side doors, and signal lights, ensuring functionality and convenience during use.

What Documents are Required for a Truck Body Modification Design Dossier?

To legally modify a truck body, the vehicle owner must prepare a complete design dossier according to Article 5 of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT, including:

  1. Technical Design Explanation for Motor Vehicles (original): This is a document explaining in detail the modification plan, the technical solutions applied, structural calculations, and technical specifications related to truck body modification. The technical design explanation must comply with the model specified in section A of Appendix I of Circular 85.
  2. Technical Drawings (original): Including overall drawings and detailed drawings of parts and assemblies related to truck body modification. The drawings must show all dimensions, technical specifications, materials, structures, and other technical requirements. Technical drawings must comply with the model specified in section B of Appendix I of Circular 85.

Both the technical design explanation and the technical drawings must be prepared by a design unit with sufficient capacity and legal status.

Cases Exempt from Creating a Truck Body Modification Design Dossier

However, not all vehicle modifications require a design dossier. According to Article 6 of Circular 85/2014/TT-BGTVT, some cases are exempt from creating a modification design dossier, including:

  • Driving training and testing vehicles: Installing or removing auxiliary brake pedals linked to the main brake pedal mechanically.
  • Dump trucks: Adding or removing dust covers for the truck body without changing the internal dimensions.
  • PICKUP trucks: Adding or removing covers for the cargo compartment but without changing the overall dimensions of the vehicle.
  • Imported, manufactured, assembled, or modified dump trucks and tank trucks before November 1, 2014: Voluntarily reducing the volume of the cargo box, tank to comply with Circular 42/2014/TT-BGTVT.
  • Modified vehicles installing an LPG fuel supply system: Removing this system to revert to using the original fuel system.
  • Semi-trailers (except dump semi-trailers) and container semi-trailers: Modifying the position of the axle, axle assembly, or kingpin until December 31, 2015, if the total mass allowed for traffic participation is less than the total mass according to the design.
  • Modifications according to sample designs published by the Vietnam Register.

If your truck body modification falls under one of the above exemptions, you will not need to create a modification design dossier, including a truck body design drawing.

Detailed Truck Body Modification Design and Registration Process

To ensure the truck body modification process is smooth and compliant, you should understand the implementation process:

  1. Choose a reputable design unit: Search for and choose a unit with experience, capacity, and reputation in the field of motor vehicle modification design. The design unit will advise, survey the current status of the vehicle, and propose a suitable modification plan.
  2. Create detailed design drawings: The design unit will create truck body design drawings based on modification requirements and technical regulations. The drawings must show all the information and technical specifications mentioned above.
  3. Design appraisal: The design dossier (explanation and technical drawings) will be submitted to the competent authority (Vietnam Register or Department of Transport) for appraisal and approval.
  4. Construction of modifications: After the design is approved, the vehicle owner chooses a reputable truck body construction workshop to perform the modifications according to the approved design drawings.
  5. Register the modified vehicle: After completing the modification, the vehicle owner brings the vehicle to the registration center for inspection and registration procedures for the modified vehicle. The registration dossier must include the truck body design drawing đã được thẩm định and other related documents.
