Classifying Truck License Plate Codes

Truck license plates are classified based on the registration location and intended use, as follows:

Classification by Location

  • Hanoi: 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, and 40.
  • Ho Chi Minh City: 41, 50-59.
  • Other provinces/cities: Each has its own code specified in Circular 24/2023/TT-BCA.

Example: License plate 29C-123.45, 29 is the code for Hanoi.

Classification by Intended Use

  • Commercial transport trucks (yellow plates): Yellow background, black letters and numbers. The serial characters use letters from A to Z (excluding some letters). Yellow plates are for vehicles involved in cargo transport activities.
  • Non-commercial transport trucks (white plates): White background, black letters and numbers. For vehicles used for personal, family, or business purposes not related to transport.

Structure of Truck License Plate Codes

Circular 24/2023/TT-BCA stipulates the structure of truck license plate codes as follows:

  • Regular trucks: 2 letters and 5 numbers. The first letter is the code for the province/city directly under the central government. The second letter is the code for the district/town/city within the province. The 5 numbers are the registration sequence number.
  • Special-purpose trucks: 3 letters and 4 numbers. The first letter is the code for the type of special-purpose vehicle. The next 2 letters are the code for the province/city. The 4 numbers are the registration sequence number.

Looking Up Truck License Plate Codes

There are three ways to look up information about truck license plates:

  • Online lookup: Visit the website of the Vietnam Register.
  • Lookup via application: Use mobile applications such as “Tìm xe – Tra cứu biển số xe” (Find Vehicle – Lookup License Plate).
  • Direct lookup at the vehicle registration authority.

Penalties for Violating Truck License Plate Regulations

Some common violations and corresponding penalties:

  • Bent or obscured license plate: VND 4,000,000 – 6,000,000.
  • No license plate: VND 2,000,000 – 3,000,000.
  • Using a fake license plate: VND 4,000,000 – 6,000,000.
  • Insufficient license plate lighting: VND 300,000 – 400,000.
  • Changing the color or background of the license plate: VND 4,000,000 – 6,000,000.
  • Blurred or scratched license plate: VND 4,000,000 – 6,000,000.
  • Attaching a license plate not issued by a competent authority: VND 4,000,000 – 6,000,000.
