Classification by Intended Use
- Commercial transport trucks (yellow plates): Yellow background, black letters and numbers. The serial characters use letters from A to Z (excluding some letters). Yellow plates are for vehicles involved in cargo transport activities.
- Non-commercial transport trucks (white plates): White background, black letters and numbers. For vehicles used for personal, family, or business purposes not related to transport.

Circular 24/2023/TT-BCA stipulates the structure of truck license plate codes as follows:
- Regular trucks: 2 letters and 5 numbers. The first letter is the code for the province/city directly under the central government. The second letter is the code for the district/town/city within the province. The 5 numbers are the registration sequence number.
- Special-purpose trucks: 3 letters and 4 numbers. The first letter is the code for the type of special-purpose vehicle. The next 2 letters are the code for the province/city. The 4 numbers are the registration sequence number.

There are three ways to look up information about truck license plates:
- Online lookup: Visit the website of the Vietnam Register.
- Lookup via application: Use mobile applications such as “Tìm xe – Tra cứu biển số xe” (Find Vehicle – Lookup License Plate).
- Direct lookup at the vehicle registration authority.
Penalties for Violating Truck License Plate Regulations
