Continental, a leading name in the tire industry, is constantly striving to innovate and develop groundbreaking technologies. Their latest tire technology concepts, ContiSense and ContiAdapt, promise to deliver enhanced safety and comfort for drivers in the future. Both systems were first introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017.
ContiSense: Smart Sensors Inside Your Tires
ContiSense operates based on the development of a special electrically conductive rubber compound. This compound allows electrical signals to be transmitted from sensors integrated inside the tire to a receiver in the vehicle. As a result, the system can continuously monitor the tire’s condition, including tread depth, temperature, and pressure.
ContiAdapt: Flexible Adjustment for All Road Conditions
ContiAdapt combines micro-compressors integrated into the wheel to actively adjust tire pressure and rim width. Changing the contact patch size of the tire with the road surface is crucial for safety and comfort when driving on various terrains.
The Perfect Combination: ContiSense and ContiAdapt
Both ContiSense and ContiAdapt are integrated into the same concept tire, maximizing the benefits of both systems. This tire is designed with three different tread zones, suitable for driving on wet, slippery, or dry surfaces.
Depending on the tire pressure and rim width, different tread zones are activated, providing the necessary “grip” in each specific situation. This allows the tire’s characteristics to adapt to current road conditions or driver preferences.
Towards the Future of Mobility
Continental believes that both technology ideas and these tires are promising solutions for the future of mobility, especially in the context of increasingly developing autonomous and sensor-equipped vehicles. Smart tires will meet the demands of automated and sensor-based driving, delivering a safer and more efficient driving experience.
