5 Types of Taxes and Fees to Pay When Buying a Truck in 2023

To legally operate a truck on the road, vehicle owners must pay the following 5 types of taxes and fees:

1. Vehicle Registration Tax

Vehicle registration tax is a fee that property owners must declare and pay to the tax authorities before putting the property into use. For cars, the registration tax is calculated as follows:

  • Registration Tax = Taxable Value x Tax Rate (%)

Where:

  • Taxable Value: Is the listed price of the vehicle by the manufacturer.
  • Tax Rate (%): Determined by vehicle type and registration location. Specifically, cars, trailers or semi-trailers pulled by cars, and similar vehicles are subject to a 2% tax rate.

2. Vehicle Registration and License Plate Fee

This fee is regulated in Article 5 of Circular 229/2016/TT-BTC, with the rate depending on the type of vehicle (semi-trailer, trailer, car) and the registration area. For cars (excluding passenger cars with fewer than 10 seats not operating in passenger transport business), the specific fees are as follows:

3. Vehicle Inspection Fee and Certification Fee

Circular 55/2022/TT-BTC regulates the service price for safety and environmental protection inspections of motor vehicles. The vehicle inspection fee for trucks is classified by tonnage as follows:

In addition to the inspection fee, vehicle owners must also pay approximately VND 40,000 for the vehicle inspection certificate fee.

Note: According to Circular 44/2023/TT-BTC, from July 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, vehicle owners only have to pay 50% of the vehicle inspection certificate fee.

4. Mandatory Auto Liability Insurance

This is the amount vehicle owners must pay to an insurance company when purchasing mandatory civil liability insurance as regulated in Clause 1, Article 7 of Decree 03/2021/ND-CP. The fee is specified in Appendix I attached to Circular 04/2021/TT-BTC, specifically for trucks as follows:
