Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, two iconic pickup truck models, have both made new moves, promising to bring more attractive options to customers in 2024.
Toyota Vietnam (TMV) has officially confirmed a minor upgrade for the Hilux pickup truck, along with the addition of the much-anticipated 4×4 (four-wheel drive) versions. This move is expected to help Hilux improve its competitive position, especially as the high-rider pickup truck segment becomes increasingly vibrant.
Specifically, the 2024 Toyota Hilux is expected to have 3 versions, accompanied by 2 engine options. The top-of-the-line Hilux 4×4 AT Adventure version will use a powerful 2.8L engine. In addition, the two automatic 4×2 AT and manual 4×4 MT versions will share the 2.4L engine. This is a valuable addition, as previously in 2023, the Hilux in Vietnam only had a single 4×2 AT single-wheel drive automatic version, leaving users with limited choices.

Leaked information about the selling price is also noteworthy. The 2024 Toyota Hilux is rumored to have a starting price from 668 million VND, which is believed to be the price of the 4×4 MT manual transmission version. Meanwhile, the 4×2 AT automatic transmission version may still maintain a price equivalent to the current version, fluctuating around 850 million VND. Most notably, the high-end Hilux Adventure 2.8 4×4 AT version is expected to be priced at around 1 billion VND, directly competing with the Ford Ranger Wildtrak.
Although the Toyota Hilux was the best-selling pickup truck in Southeast Asia in 2023, its sales in the Vietnamese market are still quite modest. In 2023, Hilux ranked last in the segment with only 134 units sold, a very small number compared to the Ford Ranger (16,085 units) or Mitsubishi Triton (2,572 units). The main reason is attributed to limited supply and a poor product structure, with only one single-wheel drive version. With the addition of 4×4 versions and equipment upgrades, the 2024 Toyota Hilux is expected to significantly improve sales and its position in the high-rider pickup truck segment in Vietnam.
Not only Toyota Hilux, but Ford Ranger, a direct competitor in the high-rider pickup truck segment, also has new moves. Ford Vietnam has confirmed that it will soon launch the Ford Ranger Stormtrak version in the Vietnamese market. According to some sources, the Ranger Stormtrak may replace the current Ranger Wildtrak version.

The Ford Ranger Stormtrak is developed based on the Wildtrak version, retaining the basic design but upgraded with some details towards sportier and more个性化. Exterior highlights include 20-inch wheels with red accents, roof rails, cargo bed rails, and black leather seats with red stitching.
Regarding the engine, the Ranger Stormtrak still uses the 2.0 bi-turbo engine and 10-speed automatic transmission similar to the Wildtrak, producing 207 horsepower and 500 Nm of maximum torque. In the Thai market, the Ranger Stormtrak has a choice of 2WD or 4WD. The selling price of the Ranger Stormtrak is expected to be around 1 billion VND, slightly higher than the Wildtrak (979 million VND). In addition to the high-rider pickup truck segment, the Vietnamese car market is also witnessing renovations in other segments.
